Dead Man’s Melody is a theatrical record that follows the story of a number of questionable characters with questionable dealings. The themes of lust, murder, sacrifice, infatuation, darkness, and the ultimate showdown with death run deep through the album – but not without a good dose of Hynes’s notoriously rousting humour.
“I wanted to make an album that speaks to my vision of the world through music. It’s a collection of carefully constructed stories that loosely flow one into the next until a whole story gradually emerges. And much like a book of short stories, it’s riddled throughout with literary allusions. But it’s also an accessible, attitude driven rock album that people might like to fuck to or drink to or fight to. And although these are all characters and stories and concepts that are close to the bone for me, there’s definitely a degree of removal. I think I got my autobiographical stuff out of my system in other mediums, so I just wanted to play different characters on this album. I approached the execution of the songs more from the pov of an actor, which was very liberating”
